Prof. Dr. Muhsin KARAŞOctober, 2005, 93 pagesAnecdotal reports from English teachers suggest that playing games during theclass hours may rise the learner?s interest and motivation leading towards a better grammaroutcome. The main concern of this study is to find out the effect of playing grammar gameson the students? level of learning when compared with traditional way of teaching language .This study reports the results of a research study which has been designed to observewhether playing games could help learning. It has been hypothesized that playing only gamesin the classroom increases students?s grammar scores compared to instructing in thetraditional way.The first step in this study was to examine definition, theory of games that arepresented in the proffesional literature. Next step was to choose the most suitable gamesaccording to the level of language, age and social characteristics of the students. Afterapplying the test, with the help of which their starting score was determined, the students ofexperimental group were exposed to the intervension. After the intervension, the studentswere presented with the test again in order to find out the level of difference in the scores oftwo tests. The same study was conducted a year later for the second time with the same groupof students for the same reason. The results indicate that students who are taught only with games do not gain higherscores in the tests when compared with the students who did not receive the treatment andfollowed traditional type of teaching. Another significant point to be mentioned is the ideas ofthe students related with games which were gained with the help of the reflection paperswritten by the experimental group students. From what they remarked in these papers weconcluded that students had nice time in class and enjoyed the games they played.Limitations of that study can be mentioned as the students? not being accustomed tothat type of teaching process and the constraint on the duration of time allocated for games.Another constraint might be the age of the students as it is accepted as the problematic one.Future research studies could be conducted based on same study alloting further time andapplying it to the different age groups. Keywords: game, grammar teaching, adolescents, types of games
