ABSTRACTMS ThesisCOLOR REMOVAL OF COTTON TEXTILE INDUSTRY WASTEWATERBY PHOTO-FENTON PROCESSCerrah DEMİRCİFirat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Environmental Engineering2007, Page: 47This study was performed to investigate the removal of COD, TOC, TSS and color from indigodyeing textile effluent using the Fenton and photo-Fenton processes. All experiments wereperformed on a laboratory scale set-up. The effects of different reaction parameters such asinitial pH, reaction time, effect of Fe(II) and H2O2 concentrations on the oxidation of indigodenim dyeing wastewater have been assessed. Effective system conditions were found to be pHof 2.8, iron-to- hydrogen peroxide molar ratio of 1:13. For Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, optimum irradiation times were found to be 120 and 60 min respectively. The removalefficiencies among Fenton and photo-Fenton processes were compared with one another.Removal of TOC, COD and color of approximately 61.49-73.95, 91.00-98.48 and 99.35-99.90% can be achieved by photo-Fenton process, respectively. The Fenton reaction isresponsible for approximately 55.86-69.42% removal of TOC, 87.04-91.84% removal of CODand 97.26-99.23% removal of color. TSS was effectively removed in both processes. Totalphosphorus and total nitrogen were slightly removed. TDS and sulfate concentrations in theeffluents were increased. Keywords: Fenton; photo-Fenton; indigo; textile industry; color removal; wastewater.VII
