Abstract (EN)

Retrospective Evaluation of the Reasons for Treatment of Pedodontic Patients Under General Anesthesia and Sedation Aims: In our study, we aimed to evaluate the number of pediatric patients who underwent dental treatment under general anesthesia and sedation procedures, which are pharmacological techniques applied to pedodontic patients who cannot be treated in a dental clinic environment, and to evaluate parameters such as demographic characteristics, oral hygiene, tooth brushing status, dental treatment history, and place of residence. It was aimed to evaluate the reasons for referral of pediatric patients under the most common groups and to specifically evaluate the syndromes and systemic diseases of the patients in these reason groups. Materials and Methods: Our study is a retrospective study and a total of 569 patients who were referred to the 'General Anesthesia and Sedation Unit' between March 2023 and December 2023 from the patients who applied to Süleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pedodontics Clinic due to reasons such as impaired cooperation, nausea-vomiting problem, presence of syndrome, physical and/or mental disability, presence of systemic problems were evaluated. Results: According to our findings, a total of 569 patients, 295 males (51.8%) and 274 females (48.2%), were evaluated. Among the 343 patients (60.3%) referred to general anesthesia, the most common reason for referral was cooperation problems The second reason for referral was 78 patients (13.7%) with systemic problems These patient groups were followed by patients with physical and/or mental disabilities with 69 patients (12.1%) and patients with syndromes with 60 patients (10.5%). The group with the least reason for referral to general anesthesia was 19 patients (3.3%) with nausea and vomiting problems. Conclusion: Investigation of general anesthesia and sedation techniques, which are pharmacological techniques applied to pedodontic patients who can not be treated in the dental clinic environment, and the reasons for referring patients to these techniques will lead dentists to have more knowledge on this subject and to refer the right patient groups to these treatments.
