Clinical and microbiological evaluation of the effectiveness of perio-flow technique in subgingival area

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to compare air polishing with conventional method and air polishing following conventional method during initial treatment of chronic and aggressive periodontitis clinically and microbiologically.16 chronic and 16 aggressive periodontitis patients were included in this study. In the first session, supragingival scaling was applied. One week later, one of the following treatment was applied to each quadrant: Air polishing (AP), Subgingival scaling and root planning (SRP), AP following SRP (SRP+AP), Supragingival scaling (S). Subgingival plaque samples were collected before-after treatment, at 1st and 3rd month. Clinical indices were recorded at baseline, 1st and 3rd month. Plaque samples were evaluated with culture method.In S, reduction level was significantly lower in PD, BOP and CAL. PD reduction was significantly greater in SRP and SRP+AP after 1st month; no significant difference was seen between subgingival applications at 3rd month for chronic periodontitis patients. No significant difference in BOP and CAL after 1st month was seen among subgingival applications. No significant difference in CAL was seen between AP and SRP+AP at 3rd month.For aggressive periodontitis patients, greatest reduction in PD, BOP and CAL was seen in SRP+AP for 1st month, SRP and SRP+AP for the 3rd month.Significant reductions in colony-forming units were noticed in only SRP+AP group with respect to the before-treatment.Having clinical and microbiological advantages, SRP+AP application was supported with this study on treatment of periodontitis patients.
