Abstract (EN)
Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral pathologies in domestic cats and is characterized by progressive and often irreversible destruction of the tissues supporting the teeth. Dental plaque formation and associated bacterial colonization play a major role in the etiopathogenesis of these diseases. With the widespread use of systemic antibiotics in treatment, the problem of antimicrobial resistance and the search for alternative therapies have attracted attention. In this context, the antimicrobial activity of natural bee products propolis and honey has been evaluated as a potential supportive agent in the treatment of periodontal infections. This study was carried out to compare the in vitro antibacterial activity of propolis, honey, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and clindamycin against microorganisms isolated from the oral cavity of cats with periodontal disease. Twenty-four cats with periodontal disease and gingivitis diagnosed at Balıkesir University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Surgery were included in the study. The microorganisms isolated from the cases were identified by standard microbiological methods and subjected to antibiogram tests with four different agents.
