Evaluation of periostin level of gingival crevicular fluid in periodontal and peri-implant disease

Abstract (EN)
Periodontal diseases; is an infectious disease that can be seen with periodontium destruction due to the inflammation of the teeth surrounding and supporting tissues which can be counted as alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, gingiva and cement depending on the complex relationships between the pathogenic microorganisms and the host. Pocket formation, hemorrhage, suppuration, tooth loss can be observed due to periodontal diseases. In the treatment of tooth loss, traditional prostheses and dental implants are used according to many parameters such as the patient's medical condition, expectation, oral hygiene habits. Increasing peri-implant disease with the spread of implant treatment in our clinics is one of the main research topics of implant dentistry. Peri-implant diseases are also inflammatory diseases such as periodontal diseases. Indices and biomarkers used for clinical and biochemical follow-up of inflammation are similar for the two disease groups. Periostin is cellular matrix protein that is member of fasciclin family. Periostin is synthesized from fibrous connective tissue such as tendons, heart valves, cornea, especially periodontal ligaments and periosteum. Periostin play a key role in tissue integrity, maturation, wound repair and periodontal ligament integrity. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the level of periostine in Periodontal (Periodontitis and gingivitis) and peri-implant (Peri-implant mucositis and Peri-implantitis) diseases in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) / peri-implanter sulcular fluid (PISF). Clinical measurements (plaque index, gingival index, clinical attachment level, probing pocket depth) and gingival fluid samples (GCF) were taken from the patients. Statistical analysis of the samples were performed with Shapiro Wilk test, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskall Wallis test and Chi square test. In our study, there was no statistically significant difference between the disease groups in terms of GCF / PISF Periostin level. Within the limitations of our study, multicenter, more detailed studies are needed to understand the potential role of periostin in periodontal and peri-implant inflammation.
