Evaluation of effectiveness of 8 week exercise training after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTKA)

Abstract (EN)

Introduction: In recent years, cardiac rehabilitation and preventive rehabilitation programson coronary artery disease have become favourably accepted.Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of exercise training afterPercutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) intervention and to give patientspositive feed-back of exercise training as a life style alteration.Material and Method: Totaly 33 patients (9 women, 24 men, mean age 60.29±10.06 years)who have came to Dokuz Eylül University Medical Faculty Cardiology Departmant and hadprimary PTCA because of stable angina pectoris were included in this study. The patientswere divided into randomly exercise and control groups. Both groups performed 20-45minutes of exercise 3 days/week for 8 week exercise group performed stretching, strenghtingand calisthenic exercise under supervision; control group performed aerobic exercise(walking, cycling) programme. The patient? body composition, flexibility, muscle strenght,cardiopulmonary fitness, max VO2, functional capacity and health-related quality of life wereassessed before and after exercise training.Results: After 8 week exercise training there were statisticaly differences in body-mass index(BMI), sit and reach test and right/left lateral flexion test (p<0.05); there was no difference inwaist-hip ratio in exercise group (p>0.05). In the control group there were significiantlydifference in muscle strenght and flexibility but no difference in BMI and waist-hip ratio.There were no difference between groups in BMI, waist-hip ratio, flexibility and musclestrenght before and after exercise training (p>0.05). Before and after exercise tarining therewere significiantly decrease in cardiac parameters ( sistolic and diastolic blood pressure, heartrate, double product) and breathing frequancy in both groups (p<0.05). We foundimprovement in perceived of exercise intensity, walking distance, maxVO2, functionalcapacity and health-related quality of life scores after 8 week exercise training in bothexercise and control group (p<0.05). There were no difference between exercise and controlgroups in cardiac parameters, breathing frequency, perceived of exercise intensity, walkingdistance, maxVO2, functional capacity and health-related quality of life (p>0.05).Conclusion: Exercise training positively effects hemodynamic parameters such as bloodpressure, heart rate, breathing frequency and perceived of exercise intensity, walking distance,functional capacity and maxVO2 in stable angina pectoris patients after PTCA intervention.Key Words: Stable angina pectoris, PTCA, exercise tarining, functional capacity.
