Synthesis and characterization of poly(N,N-dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide/itaconic acid) amphoteric copolymers and determination of their adsorption properties

In this study, N,N-dimethylamonopropyl methacrylamide-Itaconic acid (DMAPMAm:IA) hydrogels were prepared by using gamma rays. Gels were prepared by waiting of mixtures of N,N-dimethylamonopropyl methacrylamide monomer and different amount of itaconic acid monomer at different time in the gamma source. After that thermal, spectroscopic and image characterization of prepared DMAPMAm/IA hydrogels were applied by using FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM and EDS. The best amont of radiation dosage were selected by drawing graphics of percentage of gellation of hydrogels. Swelling properties of gels were investigated by studying of swelling experiments. According to the results, the highest percentage of swelling value was 4168,30 and this value is belong to DMAPMAm:IA (10 mg). Moreover, the effect of pH on swelling of hydrogels was studied.Adsorption experimets were done for determining of Co2+ and Ni2+ removal capacities of hydrogels from aqueous systems. 500-1750 mg/L metal concentartion range were studied for adsorption experiments. According to adsorption results, the best adsorption capacities were found as 244,82 mg Co2+/g DMAPMAm gel (pH 5), 215,57 mg Ni2+/DMAPMAm:IA (10 mg) gel (pH 5). Produced data were applied Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. Adsorption results were followed Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption mechanism between polymer and metal ions was tried to explain according to the FTIR, SEM and EDS analyes reults of metal ion adsorbed gels. To show availability of polymers, desorption studies were also conducted.
