GRAFTING OF ITACONIC ACID ONTO POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL)MEMBRANES(M.Sc.Thesis)Esra DEĞ RMENCGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJune 2006ABSTRACTIn this study itaconic acid (IA) was grafted onto PVA membranes via UVradiation. Grafting process was caried out under nitrogen atmosphere andbenzophenone was used as a photosynthesizer. The effects of thepolymerization time, monomer concentration and benzophenone concentrationon the grafting were investigated.The suitable polymerization period was determined as 1 hour, the concentrationof the monomer and the initiator was optimized as 0,5 M and 0,1 M respectively.The grafting percentage was found as 11% by weight under these conditions.Effects of inclusing of PVA membranes in 0,5 M IA and 0,1 M benzophenone ongrafting were investigated. Optimum grafting percentage was found as 14 % formembranes dipped in IA solution.To increase the grafting percentage, PVA membranes were irradiated for 1hour by UV radiation and then carried out under the N2 atmosphere withoutusing UV radiation. The effect of temperature and grafting time on the graftingpercentage, were investigated. IA was grafted on PVA membranes at a graftingpercentage of 17%, at 40ºC for 2 hours.Intrinstic viscosity values and swelling percentage of the grafted PVAmembranes were determied.
