Evaluate the practice of the oral medication administrations of the nurses working in psychiatry clinics

EVALUATE THE PRACTICE OF THE ORAL MEDICATIONADMINISTRATIONS OF THE NURSES WORKING IN PSYCHIATRY CLINICSKER ME DEM RBAŞIt was performed with nurses working both in the psychiatry clinics at universityhospitals and in Ministry of Health mental health and diseases hospitals. 149 nurses workingin university hospital which have psychiatry clinics and 322 nurses working in state mentalhealth and diseases hospitals have joined this research.On the basis of the data obtained from the present investigation, it was that nursesworking at university hospitals see themselves very sufficient about assesing medicationefficiency, patient medication adherence, directing patient to treatment and medicationeducation as compared with the nurses working at mental health and diseases hospitals.Nurses working at universty hospitals collect lots of data about patient?s medication usingbehaviour, medication treatment resistance, understanding and coordination level, feelingsand thoughts about medication and caregivers approach. Most of nurses working at mentalhealth hospitals keep medications in cupboards. Nurses working at university hospitals usemedication cards excessively. Mental health and diseases hospital nurses meet more reactionsof the patients who hide their medications or ask for in different ways than the nurses atuniversity hospitals. Nurses of both hospitals directly inform doctors whenever they seepatients who don?t want to take their medications. Nurses working at university hospitals usethe methods of observing medication efficiency, asking for doctor?s evaluation and measuringvital signs more than the nurses working at mental health and diseases hospitals. It has beenobserved that nurses at university hospitals use more nurse observation forms. These resultshave also been considered statistically significant (p<0.05).In accordance with the results obtained, providing continuous education, certifications,post graduate courses, in-services trainings for nurses and reorganizing the treatment rooms ofthe clinics for safe storage and delivery of the medication and using plastic type deliverymaterials were recommended, regarding to oral medication administrations of the nursesworking in psychiatry clinics.Key Words: Psychiatric nursing, oral medication administration, medication safety,medication management.
