Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to examine how psychological counsellors in early childhood period perceive and address emotional neglect in children. A qualitative research design was used and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 counsellors working in preschool education institutions. An interview form was prepared and presented for expert feedback and was developed accordingly. Thematic analysis was applied to interpret the data, supported by an artificial intelligence tool using commands given by the researcher. The findings show that counsellors generally define emotional neglect as the failure to meet children's emotional needs such as love, safety and approval rather than intentional harm. Participants indicated that cultural values often normalise emotional neglect, especially in families where physical care is prioritised over emotional bonding. According to the psychological counsellors' assessments, contributing factors included low parental emotional awareness, parents' unresolved traumas, and overuse of digital devices. Counsellors have identified long-term consequences of emotional neglect, such as emotional withdrawal, over-adjustment and emotional unresponsiveness. The early childhood years, particularly 0-6 years, were seen as critical for early identification and intervention. Recommendations include increasing emotional literacy among parents, implementing trauma-sensitive practices in schools, and integrating expressive therapies such as play and art. The study also emphasises the need for greater community awareness to develop attitudes for emotional caregiving. In conclusion, comprehensive and culturally sensitive support to strengthen counsellors' theoretical and practical skills in addressing emotional neglect might be suggested.
