Investigation of effects of boron on bowel healing in rats

Abstract (EN)
In this study, a total of 38 male adult wistar albino rats weighing between 250- 300 gr were used. Rats were housed in same conditions by 12 light/dark periods in standard cages. Animals were fed ad-libidum and allowed to drink water until two hours before the study. Boron mineral was used from the Eti Bor 48 (Borax Pentahydrate) boron compound taken from the Eti Bor Mining Facilities. In the Boron 1 (n = 7) group, 10 mg / kg Boron was diluted in saline and administered by gavage feeding for 3 days before the study. In the Boron 2 (n = 7) group, 10 mg / kg dose Boron was applied for 7 days as in the way it applied in Boron 1 group before the study. In the Boron 3 (n = 7) group, 30 mg / kg Boron was diluted in saline and administered by gavage feeding for 3 days before the study. On the 0th day, anastomosis was applied to the colon by open laparotomy under general anesthesia and boron was applied by gavage feeding till to the third day of the postoperative period. In the Boron 4 (n = 7) group, 30 mg / kg dosed boron was applied as in the Boron 1 group for 7 days before the study. On the 0th day, colon anastomosis was made and the boron application was continued by gavage feeding until the 7th day postoperatively, and the cases were sacrificed on the 7th day. No drugs were applied to the subjects in the control group. On day 0, colon anastomosis was performed and rats were sacrificed at day 3 (n = 5) and day 7 (n = 5) postoperatively and blood samples were taken by cardiac injection. MPO, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, Antioxidant Activity and Serum Levels in Blood Serum were measured by ELISA. MDA, NO GSH and AOA measurements were recorded. Specimens were also evaluated histopathologically. In this study, the results of histopathological examination of tissue sections taken from the anastomosis line in the Boron 1, Boron 2, Boron 3, Boron 4, Control 3 and Control 7 groups were evaluated as inflammatory cell, fibroblast activity, neovascularization and collagen levels, respectively. The results for inflammatory cell measurement were, 2.93 ± 0.41, 3.93 ± 0.41, 3.61 ± 0.55, 3.93 ± 0.41, 1.26 ± 0.41, 1.43 ± 0.51 respectively. All results were evaluated statistically and a statistical significant difference were found between boron 1 group and boron 2, boron 3, boron 4 control 3 and control 7 groups (P˂0,05). The number of inflammatory cells was found to be statistically significant in the boron 2, boron 3 and boron 4 group (p˂0.001). IL-1 measurement results are as follows; 20.64 ± 2.98, 19.52 ± 1.70, 21.41 ± 2.10, 21.24 ± 1.76, 22.67 ± 1.43, 20.90 ± 2.51 pg / ml respectively.All groups results were compared statistically and there was no difference between the groups (P˃0,05). IL-6 measurement results were; 41.55 ± 8.68, 25.34 ± 5.30, 31.43 ± 3.01, 19.62 ± 3.61, 25.54 ± 4.99, 16.14 ± 2.27 ng / L respectively. When the results in all groups were compared statistically, the increase in the Boron 1 group was statistically significant compared to the Boron 2, Boron 3, Boron 4, Control 3 and Control 7 groups (P˂0,05). When the increase in Boron 3 group is compared with Boron 4, Control 3 and Control 7 groups, a statistically significant difference was found between group 3 and the others (P˂0,05). 47.12 ± 8.17, 42.66 ± 4.85, 43.46 ± 4.93, 45.36 ± 10.29, 39.82 ± 6.31, 39.22 ± 5.04 ng/L. When the findings obtained in all groups were compared statistically, there was no statistical difference between the groups (P˃0,05). AOA measurement results were found as follows; 7.38 ± 0.64, 8.27 ± 0.57, 9.07 ± 1.16, 9.06 ± 0.86, 10.00 ± 1.47, 9.86 ± 0.54 mmol / L recorded as. When the results in all groups were compared statistically, there was a difference between the Boron 1 group and the Control 3 and Control 7-day groups (p˂0,05). No difference was found between Boron 2, Boron 3, Boron 4 groups and other groups (P˃0,05). In conclusion, contrary to existing findings in the literature when borax pentahydrate solution was given 30 mg / kg dose by oral route (gavage) it was found to have positive effects on bowel incision wound healing in rats.
