Effects of boron compounds and ozonated olive oil on experimental microsporum canis infection in rats

SUMMARY Effects of Boron Compounds and Ozonated Olive Oil on Experimental Microsporum Canis Infection in Rats This study was carried out to designate the effects of topically applied boric acid, boron additive gel and ozonated olive oil to rat's skin compared with the terbinafine used in classical treatment againist the zoonotic dermatophhyte microsporum canis and experimentally-generated dermatophytosis on rat's skin. In this study, 39 Wistar albino female rats used which are 6 to 8 weeks old weighing 200 to 250 grams. Microsporum Canis infected part was created experimentally-generated on all rats' back. Rats were evaluated for histopathological findings and were subjected to clinical scoring according to clinical findings on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28. In the treatment, the rats were divided into 5 groups; Group A (n = 8) cream containing %1 terbinafine, Group of B (n = 8) ozonated olive oil, Group C (n = 8) %3 boric acid solution, Group D (n = 8) pentaborate pentahydrate-containing gel were topically applied once a day to infected skin area for 28 days. Group E (n = 7) was left as a control group and no treatment was applied to the skin area of M. canis infection. When the clinical findings were evaluated, in Group A which antifungal cream containing %1 terbinafine was applied in four of eight rats, in group B which ozanated olive oil was applied in 1 of 8 rats, in group C which contains %3 boric acid was applied in 6 of 8 rats, in group D which contains sodium pentaborate pentahydrate gel was applied in 3 of 8 rats full healing was seen. When the clinical scoring findings were evaluated statistically, all groups treated at the end of experience were found to be in favor of reducing the clinical scores according to the E Control Group (p<0,05). When the clinical scoring findings were evaluated statistically, it was understood that the difference between treatment groups (A, B, C, D Groups) was not significant in terms of reducing clinical scores at the end of experience (p>0,05). On the histopathological evaluation, amount of dermis granulation and inflammatory cell infiltration, organization of collagen threads, collagen pattern, young and mature collagen quantity parameters and histopathologic lesion healing status was evaluated. Mature collagen amount parameters with improved condition of histopathological lesions were evaluated. Histopathological evaluation revealed that the lesion areas in Group E were wider than the other groups. It was also found that the inflammatory cells were more dense in Group E, while the inflammatory cells were less observed in Group D and %3 containing boric acid applied Group C and sodium pentaborate pentahydrate gel applied Group D. When the histopathological examination was evaluated statistically, it was found that there was a difference in activity between Group C, which received 3% boric acid treatment from treatment groups, and Group D, which applied gel containing sodium pentaborate pentahydrate, from the other E Control Group and other treatment groups (Groups A and B) were found (p <0.05). ). Statistical analysis of the histopathological scores revealed that the difference between the C group treated with boronic acid and the D group treated with gel containing sodium pentaborate pentahydrate was found to be insignificant (p> 0.05). As a result; It has been found that containing boron compounds to 3% boric acid and gel with sodium pentaborate pentahydrate can be used in the treatment of the infection with M. canis in rats. 3% boric acid and gel containing sodium pentaborate pentahydrate has proven to be an alternative treatment option to conventional antimicrobial agents such as terbinafine, which is an antifungal agent, providing easy, cheap, reliable and effective healing, without side effects.
