Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACTTHE EFFECT OF OF HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF REFLUX ESOPHAGITISReflux esophagitis is defined as symptom or mucosal detriment which occurs as a result of esophagus reflux of gastric content. There are controversial publications concerning the investigating the effects of helicobacter pylori infection on the development of reflux esophagitis. According to some studies conducted, helicobacter pylori infection has been found as a factor on the development of reflux esophagitis; but in some other studies it has been found as a non-factor.The aim of our study is to investigate the frequency of reflux esophagitis in helicobacter pylori positive and negative cases and to determine the effect of helicobacter pylori infection on the development of reflux esophagitis.228 female and 138 male, at total 366 patients; who resorted to the child gastroenterology polyclinic between the dates January 2009 and December 2011 with the complaints of abdominal pain, dyspeptic symptoms, vomiting, regurgitation symptoms, chronic cough, growth retardation, weight loss; and whose esophagogastroduodenoscopy and biopsy have been carried out, have been included in the study. Patients have been separated in to two groups as helicobacter pylori positive and helicobacter pylori negative. Out of 181 helicobacter pylori positive cases, while 82 (%45,3) patients have been detected with reflux esophagitis, 99 (%54,7) patients have not been detected with esophagitis. Out of 185 helicobacter pylori negative cases, while in 94 (%50,8) reflux esophagitis has been detected as positive, 91 (%49,2) patients have not been detected with reflux esophagitis.Furthermore, it has been found that helicobacter pylori frequency increases with the weight z scores of the cases, whereas there is no meaningful difference between height z scores and helicobacter pylori frequency; also it has been detected that there is no meaningful difference between height and weight z scores of the cases and the frequency of reflux esophagitis. And when the age groups and Hp frequency are compared, an increase has been detected in 11?18 age group in comparison with 5?10 age group. In addition, that there has been an increase in esophagitis frequency of 217 patients aged between 11?18 in comparison with 149 patients aged between 5?10 has been considered as meaningful. That the frequency of helicobacter pylori and reflux esophagitis increases with age has been found. In conclusion, in that study we conducted, helicobacter pylori infection has been found not to pose a risk in development of reflux esophagitis; and any statistical meaningful difference between Hp positivity and reflux esophagitis has not been detected.Key words: Reflux esophagitis, Helicobacter pylori, prevalence
