Abstract (EN)

Abstract This study explores the psychological resilience and social identity of Palestinian ex-detainees who endured years of imprisonment under the Zionist occupation. Grounded in Psychological Resilience Theory and Social Identity Theory, the research examines how these individuals coped with the harsh conditions of detention, preserved their sense of self, and navigated the challenges of reintegration into society after their release. Using a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 Palestinian ex-detainees to uncover their lived experiences. The findings reveal that psychological resilience was fostered by a combination of faith, perseverance, and the ability to reinterpret suffering as part of a collective struggle. Social identity emerged as a critical source of strength, with unity among detainees and a shared commitment to the Palestinian cause reinforcing emotional and psychological well-being. The study also highlights the profound challenges faced by ex-detainees during reintegration, including societal stigma, disrupted family dynamics, and economic hardship. Religion played a central role throughout, serving as both a personal refuge and a collective framework for resistance. This research contributes to the understanding of resilience as a dynamic and culturally embedded process, extending existing theories by emphasizing the interplay between individual and collective resilience. It also underscores the need for tailored post-release support programs and advocacy efforts to address the enduring impacts of imprisonment on Palestinian ex-detainees. The findings offer valuable insights into the broader human capacity for resilience in the face of systemic oppression.
