Measurement of oxidative and antioxidant stress markers in retinitis pigmentosa's disease

Abstract (EN)

SUMMARY Aim The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of RP patients and to compare the antioxidant-oxidant status in patient with retinitis pigmentosa and to compare with healthy controls. Materials - Method Thirty-five patients with retinitis pigmentosa and thirty-three control subjects of a similar age and gender were enrolled in the present study. A detailed ophthalmologic examination was performed on all cases and the macula and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements were recorded. Native thiol, total thiol, disulfide levels, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, and native thiol/total thiol ratios, total oxidant status, total antioxidant status, catalase, ceruloplasmin, albumin, ischemia modified albumin were measured and compared between the retinitis pigmentosa and control groups. Results Thirty-five patients diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa were included in the study and 33 healthy subjects without any systemic or ophthalmologic disease. 57.1% of Retinitis Pigmentosa patients were male and 42.9% were female. 54,5% of the control group were male and 45,5% were female. The mean age was 37.68 ± 12.76 years in RP patients, while the mean age of the control group was 35.18 ± 8.74 years. There was not a statistically significant difference between the retinitis pigmentosa and the control group in terms of TAS, catalase, ceruloplasmin, albumin, native thiol, total thiol (p>0,05). TOS, İMA, disulfide levels, disulfide/native thiol and disulfide/total thiol ratios were significantly higher in retinitis pigmentosa group compared to control group (p<0,05). Conclusion This study found evidence of continued oxidative stress and oxidative damage in patients with RP. However, further study is needed to analyze how the antioxidant-oxidant state progresses at different stages of RP.
