User perceptions of robot journalism

Abstract (EN)
This study aims to compare news articles written by human journalists and robot journalists based on various criteria. Twenty participants answered general questions about robot journalism before evaluating news content on four different topics, attempting to determine whether the articles were written by humans or AI. They then assessed the articles based on fluency, readability, reliability, objectivity, simplicity, comprehensibility, enjoyment, numerical-data structure, emotional expression, and dullness. Findings indicate that human journalists' articles were perceived as more fluent, natural, and emotional, whereas robot journalists excelled in producing data-driven and impartial content. Participants acknowledged that AI enhances speed and efficiency in journalism but emphasized the need for limitations. Concerns were raised about the potential risks of uncontrolled AI usage. The study highlights the strengths and weaknesses of both human and robot journalism, suggesting that a hybrid model could be more effective. Combining the speed and objectivity of robot journalists with the emotional intelligence and authenticity of human journalists could lead to the production of more comprehensive and engaging news articles.
