In 1796, Mary Wollstonecraft published Letters Written during a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, which she wrote during her journey to a destination different from the eighteenth-century Grand Tour of Europe. Authorized to restore a ship carrying silver freight lost in Sweden, Wollstonecraft sets off for a business journey. Wollstonecraft traces societal development, the economic and political condition of states through philosophical contemplations, sentimental narrative, accompanied by sublime experience within the framework of the eighteenth-century Grand Tour. A famous writer in the Gothic genre, Ann Radcliffe initiated a journey to continental Europe during the summer of 1794. The outcome of this journey was the travel account A Journey Made in the Summer of 1794, through Holland and the Western Frontier of Germany, with a Return Down the Rhine: to which are Added Observations During a Tour to the Lakes of Lancashire, Westmoreland, and Cumberland (1795). Radcliffe incorporates elements of sublimity and everyday life, not ignoring the physicality of the cities, people, and their manners. The Grand Tour, a widespread form of European travel among the British in the eighteenth century, provided fostering one's classical education through travelling places regarded as centres of civilisation, not only for men but also for women. All these components unite around the function the sublime performs. To answer the questions appearing in minds, this study argues that for the two women Grand Tour travel writers Wollstonecraft and Radcliffe, who travelled in the context of the Romantic period, the sublime represents the mobility of the mind. Encounters with sublime nature display the individual's adequacy in thinking and analysing the external environment, which illustrates that the sublime is an instrument of reason. In brief, I aim to explain my argument through the Grand Tour as travel practice, the context of the Romantic period, and the Kantian sublime.
