Abstract (EN)
This thesis addresses the political and social organizational structure of the Greeks within the Ottoman Empire's borders from before the declaration of the Tanzimat Edict (1837/38) to after the proclamation of the Islahat Edict (1856/57) and the socio-political reflections of this structure. The first part of the thesis, formed by the text analysis of the Atik Ahkâm (H.1253-1273) register, is followed by the second part, which includes the transcription of the same register. During the period covered by the register, the thesis examines the efforts of the Ottoman elites to implement religious, social, administrative, and financial measures in the social organization of the Greek subjects. In the second part of the thesis, the problems faced by the Ottoman Greek population and the responses to these problems are observed, and in this context, the intellectual background of the register is attempted to be revealed. In this sense, the core question that forms the backbone of this thesis is precisely the relationship of the Ottoman political center with its non-Muslim subjects, in other words, the position of non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire between 1839-1856.
