Workload in health services effect of safety of patients: A research on Fatih region

The phenomenon of workload occurs in the case of creating more jobs than the responsibility they should undertake. The excess workload adversely affects the employee's responsibility to his work. Especially the high level of work load of the employees will have a negative effect on the performance and motivation of the employee and the quality service of the institution. Providing a quality and correct health service depends on proper patient care and quality patient safety. In order to maintain safe and high quality patient care, it is necessary to ensure the right and adequate employment of health workers and reduce the workload of the employees. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of work load on patient safety in public hospitals operating in the Fatih region of Istanbul. As a result of the study, it was found that nurses' workload negatively affected patient safety. As the workload of nurses increases, patient safety tends to decrease. Within the scope of the research results, it may be suggested to increase the regulatory practices that are appropriate to reduce the workload by taking into account the reasons of error and general recommendations of health workers, to share the number of patients that the health workers provide care, to take into account the patient needs and to restructure the patient-employee ratio.
