Evaluation of the morphologic and morpometric features of the sacrocoxygeal region by MRİ method

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to provide a more comprehensive resource to the literature and to better clinically evaluate the sacrococcygeal region by performing both morphological evaluation and morphometric measurements of the sacrococcygeal region. In the study, images of 100 adult individuals (60 women, 40 men) who applied to Adana Yüreğir State Hospital in 2022 and underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were retrospectively examined. Thirty-three (33) different morphometric and morphological parameters and anthropometric and angular measurements in the region were evaluated, taking into account gender differences. Measurements were made in the presence of a specialist radiologist, and individuals with any congenital anomalies, pathologies, surgical history or trauma that would affect measurements related to the sacrococcygeal region were excluded from the study. Measurements were made by the same person and repeated 3 times. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out in the SPSS package program. Basis ossis sacri transverse diameter and S2 and S3 corpus vertebra diameter were found to be statistically significantly higher in men than in women (p<0.005). No statistically significant differences were seen between men and women in all other measurements. We believe that the findings obtained as a result of this study show that the gender factor has a significant morphological and morphometric effect on the sacrococcygeal region and may provide important clues to clinicians in procedures such as thecaloscopy or surgical interventions in coccydynia and in determining safe anesthetic areas.
