Lecturer opinions and criticism method approaches regarding the art critism course

Art criticism is a discipline aimed at elucidating the meaning and quality of artworks. The art criticism course holds a significant place in painting education programs for teacher candidates to acquire creativity and aesthetic consciousness, as well as to develop skills in interpreting artworks and critical thinking. In order to achieve the objectives of the course, lecturers need to be proficient in art sciences, art philosophy, aesthetics, and all disciplines related to art. Therefore, in this study, the lecturer's teaching methods and suggestions regarding the art criticism course, which is included in the curriculum of art education departments, were examined. In addition, in the study, art criticism taught in the education faculties of 13 state universities in Turkey was examined in terms of course contents, methods and resources used. The study was conducted with a case study, one of the qualitative research traditions. The participants of the study were six lecturers from various state universities in Turkey. Data were collected through semi-structured interview protocols and document analysis. The collected data were analyzed through content analysis. According to the findings, the discussions and documents of the lecturers were categorized into 10 themes and 22 subthemes. Based on the gathered data regarding the preparation for the course, course planning, determination of content, assessment processes, art disciplines, the relationship between art sciences and criticism, and recommendations, it was determined that the art criticism courses at 13 state universities are structured with either interdisciplinary or unidirectional understanding. Furthermore, according to the findings, adopting an interactive and interdisciplinary teaching approach and ensuring that lecturers and students are knowledgeable about art sciences are crucial.
