The effect of exercise on fibrinolytic and coagülation systems in healthy volunteers

Background: Exercise leads to activation of coagulation and fibrinolytic systems. In thisstudy, we aimed to evaluate changes in fibrinolytic and coagulation systems occuring aftersubmaximal exercise.Methods: Twelve healthy, non-smoker volunteers (ranging in age from 20 to 30 years) whodid not have comorbid disease, make regular exercise was included in the study. All subjectswere tested on the cycle ergometer to maximal level of exertion. Peripheral blood sampleswere taken before and within 0, 15 and 60 minutes after the test. Prothrombin time (PT),partial activated-thromboplastin time (aPTT), d-dimer, fibrinogen, plasminogen-activatorinhibitor 1 (PAI-1) and thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) levels weremeasured.Results: The results showed that PT, D-dimer levels produced significant increase at 0. and60. minutes after exercise when they were compared to baseline levels [In both: p=0.002,p=0.002 (0.min,60.min)]. aPTT levels increased non-significantly at 0. min relative tobaseline (p=0.61) and shortened at 60.min compared to baseline and 0. min. significantly(aPTT baseline -60.min p = 0,019, aPTT 0-60. min p= 0,007). Fibrinogen levels did not showany significant changes compared to baseline levels. When we compared PAI-I and TAFIlevels within 0. and 60. minutes after training, there was a marked decrease (p=0.033)regarding PAI-I together with a decrease in TAFI levels which was not statisticallysignificant.Conclusion: It can be concluded that submaximal aerobic training may be the most suitableform of exercise for healthy persons due to improvement in fibrinolytic activity.Key words: Exercise, coagulation, PAI, TAFI
