Abstract (EN)

Objective: The smell is an important sensation in our day life. The nasal septum deviation (NSD) most important sinonasal pathology of the smell disorders. In this study we aimed to compare preoperative and postoperative smell function and OB volume changes in patients with NSD. Materials and methods: A detailed anamnesis was obtained from the patients, routine physical examinations and routine ENT examinations were performed. Septum deviation was diagnosed by anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy. The T2-weighted cranial MRI examination with the preoperative "sniffin 'sticks 112 Extended test" scent test with FSE technique were performed on patients were scheduled for surgery.Patients were performed surgery of septoplasty . FSE technique with T2-weighted cranial MRI examination and '' sniffin 'sticks 112' 'extended test' 'odor test were performed at postoperative 60 days (2 months). OB volumes and odor tests of patients were compared preoperatively and postoperatively. Findings: In our study, preoperative and postoperative odor test results were compared between the deviating and non-deviating sides (opposite side of the deviations) and when the results were analyzed statistically; Values of postoperative period on the deviated side were increased when odor threshold test, discrimination test, identification test, and TDI score were compared to preoperative and postoperative period (p <0.05). When the preoperative and postoperative mean OB volumes of the patients in our study were calculated and statistically compared; On the deviated side, the mean OB volume values were calculated 46.32 ± 7.98mm3 at preoperative period and 52.39 ± 7.32mm3 at postoperative period. The mean OB volume in deviation side was significantly increased postoperatively (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Recovery of odor functions and increase in OB volume were found on the side deviated from patients with NSD at postoperatively. Key words: Nasal septum deviation, Olfactory Bulbus, Odor functions
