Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT PhD Thesis PRODUCTION, CHARACTERISATION AND UTULATION OF CERAMIC PIGMENTS EMEL ÖZEL Anadolu University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Ceramics Engineering Program Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Servet TURAN 2004, 215 pages In this study, production and characterisation of pigments by using less expensive raw materials and wastes containing valuable metals was undertaken. Brown Fe-Cr pigments were produced by using natural limonite and chromite mixtures. Chocolate brown colour was obtained corresponding to the commercial brown pigments but a low cost. First time in the literature, interactions between ZnO containing glazes and iron-chromium pigments were determined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) attached with an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX). Samsun flotation waste was used as iron resource to produce pigments and various colour hues changing from reddish brown to black were obtained. Black Fe203-Cr203 pigments were produced by using ferrochrome and iron containing waste. Natural zircon mineral could not be used in zircon pigment production. Zircon was decomposed and decomposition products were used in zircon pigment preparation instead of pure zirconium dioxide. In addition, the blue pigments based on willemite structure having low percentage of Co were produced and characterized. Also, the effect of willemite crystals and pigment additions as colouring and seeding agent on the micro and macro-structure of the glazes were investigated.
