BPEL allows users to compose andexecute web services-based workflows utilizing distributed web services. StandardBPEL allows dynamic execution of web services, but automatic service selection isnot supported. We propose to extend WS-BPEL to allow users to specify Quality ofServices (QoS) parameters that will guide the BPEL execution engine to selectappropriate services during run-time that will improve the engine performancetowards higher system throughput. For this we propose to use some simple serviceselection algorithms that utilize user-specified QoS parameters. We implemented ourproposal by extending an open-source BPEL engine, ActiveBPEL, to support QoSparameters. We also developed an extensive test environment to test the performanceof the algorithms for service selection. We present the results showing that QoS-supported BPEL execution improves the overall system throughput by lowering theaverage execution times of BPEL processes. Keywords: Web services, service selection, QoS, BPEL, XML.1
