Abstract (EN)
In this study, the effect of oral and silent reading on understanding was analyzed,and the main aim of the study is to present whether oral or silent reading is more effective on understanding for the eighth grade students in the primary schools. For this purpose, controllable pre and post test models were used in the study. Questionnaires and achivement tests were used as data gathering methods. The data were obtaired from 33 eighth grade students in Atatürk Primary School and Oruçoğlu Primary School in Afyonkarahisar city center. Frequencies, t-test and cross tabulation were used for analyzing the data. As a result, it has been found that the effect of silent reading understanding is much more than the effect of oral reading. Exercises for developing students? silent reading skills should be given place more, and beside teachers, the parents should help students to gain these abilitics.
