An analysis of Shawqi Daif's perspectives on the renewal of Arabic grammar

This study explores the emergence of the science of Nahw (Arabic grammar), its significant role in Arabic linguistic studies, the challenges it has faced over time, and the innovative approaches developed in response. In particular, it examines Shawkī Ḍayf's efforts to simplify the discipline of nahw. The thesis analyzes Shawkī Ḍayf's life, scholarly personality, academic works, and publications. The reasons behind the emergence of nahw are examined within religious and social contexts. With the conversion of non-Arab communities to Islam, linguistic errors began to appear, necessitating the establishment of grammatical rules to ensure the correct understanding of the Qur'an. This process made the formation of nahw essential. Furthermore, the study highlights that as nahw became increasingly complex and difficult, various reformist movements emerged to make it more comprehensible. Finally, early and modern reformist movements are evaluated comparatively. In particular, the core views in Shawkī Ḍayf's work Tajdīd al-Naḥw are analyzed in relation to the classical methodology of nahw.
