Abstract (EN)
In this cross-sectional study we aimed to determine the metabolic syndrome prevalence in schizoprenic patients in our region and to evaluate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and medication of the patients. High density lipoprotein (HDL), fasting glucose, triglyceride levels, blood pressure and waist circumference at the level of the umbilicus of the patients included to study were measured. In our study with 87 schizophrenia patient, according to Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III), ATP III A and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criterias; metabolic syndrome prevalence were %29.9, %35.6 and %42.5 respectively. Our results were lower than one study and higher than two studies in our country about metabolic syndrome prevalence in schizophrenia patients. We determined a lower metabolic syndrome prevalence comparing with other studies which were performed in other countries. There was no difference metabolic syndrome prevalence between monotherapy and combined antipsychotic medications. The metabolic syndrome prevalence were significantly lower in biperiden users than the patients didn?t use biperiden. More systematic studies with more patients must be performed to determine metabolic syndrome prevalence in schizophrenia patients in our country. Keywords: Schizophrenia, Metabolic syndrome, Antipsychotics
