Thesis THE EFFECT OF THE COLD PLASMA ON THE PROPAGATION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES ALİ TE$İL Fırat University Graduate School of Science and Technology Department of Physics 1995, Page: 72 In this study, the effect of the cold plazma on the propagation of the electromagnetic waves have been investigated. The refractive indei of cold plazma have been found by using Maxwell and Langevin equations. The refractive index depends on that collision frequency between the partıcıles plasma density, magnetic field and angle between wave normal and the magnetic field of Earth. These parameters in the refractive indei have been obtained from" International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)" The calculations have been done at the geographic coordinate of m A '0 - 39.0 'fü, at 300 km height, at 12.00 LT and 24.00 LT, for June. T he following results have been found. alfor B-0, v-o condition The elfect of the cold plasma on the propagation electromagnetic waves have been studied. The refractive index are negative when angular frequency w are smaller than 30 rad/sn and positive when greater than 30 rad/sn.IV b) for B*0, v=0,8=0 condition The refractive indei have been computed, when the angle between wave normal and the magnetic field are 8= 0\30*,60*. and 90*. The refractive index increases from the negative values to positive values with wave frequency. c) for B-0. v * 0 condition The refractive index becomes complex at this condition. The real part of the refractive index increases with wave frequency white imaginary part is almost constant d) for B*0. v *Q, 0-90* condition The real and imaginary part of the refractive index have been obtained. These vaiues have been examined with the wave frequency. Approximately, the real part of refractive index between 20-30 rad/sn wave frequency is zero. Also, the ref active index have been examined with the altitude. It is shown that refractive index changes with altitude similar the electron density changes with altitude.
