The study's objective is to understand the factors that hinder women's political participation, including historical gender constructs that shape women's perspectives on decision-making and leadership roles. The study examines how colonial gender constructs have persisted in modern politics, resulting in the gradual marginalisation of women after independence. Comparative and exploratory research designs were utilised to identify gaps in Gambian history and to generate potential explanations for the decline of women in decision-making. The study found that the Gambia's political system was insusceptible to women's participation as a result of colonial administration and the arrival of Islam. The traditional gender roles and systemic patriarchal structure must be dismantled to achieve gender equality. It has revealed that women have always been interested and indirectly involved in the country's political development. However, women's confidence has effaced from the political space over time due to the shift in Africa's political systems to external influence. The study concluded that international assistance and legal measures alone are insufficient in eliminating patriarchal and traditional norms in private and public spaces. Full cooperation of the government is necessary. The government can effectively tackle the challenges that hinder women's political participation and counter the negative effects of conservative groups against women's representation.
