The analyse of the recent period Turkish cinema within the theories of popular culture

In this work it is aimed to read the Recent Period Turkish Cinema as a period and to analyse this period with the assumption that cinema is a product of popular culture in this context. During the analysing process, theories of popular culture which approach the subject positively or negatively were consulted. In the first part of the thesis important works concerning popular culture, ideas and conceptualizations were discussed. In the second part especially social, cultural and economic changes especially in recent Turkish history were examined, the popular culture in Turkey and Recent Period Turkish Cinema were evaluated within this context. Later, from the point of political economic view, the contemporary conditions of production, distribution and screening aspect and the influence these conditions have on cinema were studied and that there is a monopolisation and oligopoly tendency in industrial film production was detected. This tendency is directly or indirectly effective in the film production process in Turkey and is shaping the film industry. Especially the distribution and screening sectors play a profoundly determining role in matters such as which theatres and with how many copies a film will be screened and how many weeks will it stay in screening. This situation is one of the important factors in a films box office success and popularisation. Finally, with the assumption that there is a certain tendency of genrefication, the term "genre" was analysed within the context of cinema and popular culture. Genrefication has a very important impact on shaping of the general structure of popular cinema. Therefore, while examining the recent period cinema, under each genre title, the themes and narrative construction were examined too. Similarities and common points of recent period film were determined. In this chapter it was determined that in mainstream cinema the genres with their own kind of structures and original narrative forms and themes do not emerge, yet formulas and codes whose success was tested are repeated.
