Pre-service teachers' views about using of literary works and on the contributions of literary works to transfer values in teaching social studies

The aim of the study is to state using of literary works and the pre-service teachers' views on the contributions of literary works to transfer values in teaching social studies. Qualitative research method was used in the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 pre-service teachers taking the course "Reviews of Oral and Written Literature in Social Studies" during 2015-2016 academic year in Spring Term and 72 lesson plans in the course were analysed with document analysis technique. NVivo11 software package was used to analyse the data. As a result of the research, it was found that pre-service teachers liked to read various literary works while some of them neglect to read because of social media, pre-service teachers couldn't have a complete definition of literary works and describing literary works mostly, they try to create a definition either giving the examples of different genres of literature or referring to the characteristics of literary works, pre-service teachers state that literary works can be used in many subjects including history, geography, citizenship, economy etc. in social studies course, most of pre-service teachers indicate that the associations with literary works are inadequate in the Social Studies Curriculum. Also, it was determined that they have prepared lesson plans mostly at the 7th grade level, in the field of such as poems, jokes, short stories and they associate values such as sensitivity, patriotism, and respect. Based on the results of the research, it can be said that the oral and written literary works and value relation should be given more place in the Social Studies Curriculum.
