Social studies teachers' levels of using social media in teaching and learning processes in terms of various variables

The rapid increase and widespread of use social media, concurrently with the digital revolution by means of transition from Web 1.0 technology to Web 2.0, this has made social media usage compulsory in the field of education along with many other fields. This research, examines that the social media adoption levels of social studies teachers and their usage levels of social media in the learning and teaching process in terms of various variables and examines the relationship between social media adoption levels and levels of using it in learning and teaching processes. In this research "personal information form", "social media adoption scale" and "scale of the effect of social media usage on learning and teaching processes." were used. According to the total scores, it was observed that both scales did not show normal distribution. From this point of view, the nonparemetric Mann Whitney U test was used to compare two independent groups, and the the nonparemetric Kruskal Wallis H test was used when comparing more than two independent groups. The study group of the research consists of 118 social studies teachers working in Eskişehir province, Odunpazarı and Tepebaşı districts in the 2018-2019 academic year. As a result of the research; it has been observed that there is a significant difference in the social media adoption levels of teachers according to the variables of increase in education level, frequency of using social media, being a member of social media groups and having in-service training. Similarly, it was determined that there is a significant difference in the level of using social media in learning and teaching processes according to the variables of increasing educational status, frequency of entering social media, and being a member of groups in social media. Based on this; it is observed that they adopt social media and their level increases in learning and teaching processes when participating teachers spend personal time on social media and become a member of social media groups according to their personal preferences and interests. It was concluded that there is a positive relationship between the level of social media adoption and the level of using it in learning and teaching processes.
