Determination of orthorexia nervosa and eating attitudes of individuals who make diet on social media: İnstagram example

Abstract (EN)

Objectives: The aim of our study is to examine the symptoms of orthorexia nervosa and eating attitudes of individuals who are dieting using social media. Material and Method: Our research is a descriptive study with 421 people who are in Instagram, who are dieting (aiming to lose weight, aiming weight protect). As a data collection tool; Surveymonkey survey site: General Information Form, International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ), ORTO-15, EAT-40 was used. SPSS 22.0, Spearman Corrlation Analysis and PearsonExact Chi-Square tests were used for statisticalanalysis and significance value was accepted p <0.05. Results:%85.5 of the participants tend to have orthorexia and %29.7 of the participants have eating disorders. There was not means significantly between gender, marital status, education level, chronic disease, body mass index, the way of dieting and orthorexia. When the physical activity and orthorexia trends were compared, as the orthorexic tendencies increased, the degree of physical activity increased. (p<0.05). Orthorexia tendencies increased as daily instagram usage time increased (p<0.05). When the factors affecting eating attitudes were examined, gender, education level, diet, body mass index, daily instagram usage time were found to be statistically significant in eating disorder (p<0.05). The tendency of the individual to have orthorectic increases as eating disorder increases (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our research will contribute to more comprehensive studies to examine the prevalence of orthorhexia and the factors associated with this condition. Ortoreksiya Nervosa criteria should be determined, evaluation methods should be raised to raise awareness of social media users.
