Abstract (EN)

During the last decades, the controllability and improvement of system capacity have become more important in power transmission systems. Electric power transmission lines were initially built to link remote load centres and generating plants by meeting the changes in load due to various factors in the most economical way. In recent years, a large demand has been placed on the transmission network, and demands will continue to increase. In most of the existing transmission systems, a desired amount of power cannot be transferred due to some physical limitations. In order to exploit the existing power plants more efficiently, power capacity of transmission lines need to be increased. By this way, requirement of new power plants is minimized. In the past, mechanical or electromechanical control systems have been used. Nowadays, faster control methods have been improved. STATCOM, (FACTS-Flexible AC Transmission Systems), is connected parallel to the load to provide reactive power to balance the system. Thus, the power transmission line capacity is increased. In this thesis, the basic concepts related to compensation are examined, flexible alternating current transmission lines, STATCOM and PID control are studied. Control of STATCOM in a transmission system by PID controller is realized in MATLAP / Simulink environment and the results are summarized.
