Abstract (EN)

Language is a fundamental tool in the formation of thought and the expression of mental processes. Cognitive actions that occur in the human mind gain meaning through language and transform into communication. In this context, mental verbs constitute an important group of verbs that express the mental processes of the individual such as thinking, understanding, feeling and believing. These verbs, which reflect the functioning of the mind at the level of language, are structures worth examining both cognitively and linguistically. The relationship established between the individual's inner world and the outer world can be observed through mental verbs, and these verbs help us understand how thought is structured and shared through language. In this thesis, the mental verbs in the work were determined by taking the work called Süheyl ü Nev-bahâr, one of the important mesnevis of the 15th century Turkish literature, as a basis. In the first stage of the study, verbs, verb classifications and the concept of mental verbs were discussed within a theoretical framework. Then, by applying the meetin analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods, the verbs that express mental processes in the work were systematically determined. The mental verbs determined were; Based on the fact that they reflect the perceptual, cognitive and emotional states of the characters, they are classified under three main headings as "perception verbs, perception verbs" and "emotion verbs" and listed in alphabetical order. As a result of the study, a total of 249 mental verbs were determined, 43 of which were perception verbs, 66 were perception verbs and 140 were emotion verbs. Each verb was exemplified in the context of the couplet in which it was used, the relevant couplet was presented both in its original form and in the form translated into modern Turkish, and the meaning of the verb was explained in context. In this respect, the study reveals the ways in which mental processes are expressed in Süheyl ü Nev-bahâr on a linguistic level and offers an exemplary and systematic examination of the use of mental verbs in classical Turkish literature. In addition, the comprehensive identification of mental verbs in an important work from the Old Anatolian Turkish period aims to shed light on the characteristics of the use of these verbs in literary contexts. Keywords: Linguistics, mental verb, Süheyl ü Nev-bahâr, verbs of perception, verbs of cognition, verbs of emotion.
