Abstract (EN)

The United Nations emphasizes the concept of family planning being a fundamental human right, attempting to prevent unintended pregnancies and unfavorable maternal and neonatal outcomes, whilst also supporting informed contraceptive options for people. This study investigates the factors affecting family planning among married women in Idlib, Syria. The present study implemented a design that was cross-sectional, and an overall of 315 ever-married women aged 15–49 years based in Idlib were conveniently selected. The tool for obtaining data was a questionnaire. It was found that among these women, 44.4% resided in permanent homes, 37.5% lived in IDP tents, and 47.9% were unemployed. A significant majority (70.8%) were married between the ages of 10-19 years. In terms of decision-making regarding family planning, 80% reported making joint decisions with their husbands. Notably, 61.9% had never heard of family planning prior to marriage. Previous contraceptive use was reported by 67.9%, while current usage was at 51.1%. Furthermore, only 41.9% of the women received health education after giving birth. Previous use of contraceptives was significantly associated to the husband's occupation, specifically those in unskilled or technical jobs (AOR 5.719, 95% CI 1.602-115.688, p=0.017), the absence of male children (AOR 0.460 95% CI: 0.001- 0.507, p = 0.002), and smaller household sizes of 1-4 members (AOR 5.409, 95% CI 2.888-16.246, p=0.020). Current contraceptive use was associated with the age at first pregnancy 20-24 years, (AOR 0.266, 95% CI 0.116 -0.484, p <0.001). visits from a lady health worker (AOR 15.396, 95% CI 6.491-271.524, p<0.001), and belonging to a nuclear family (AOR 0.529, 95%Cl 0.030-0.789 p= 0.025). The results presented emphasize the critical importance of comprehensive initiatives to improve Idlib residents' the usage of family planning as well as other reproductive health services.
