Abstract (EN)

Agin AS. Frequency of stainless steel crowns use to restore primary molars: a retrospective study, Ph.D. Thesis, Yeditepe University, Institute of Health Sciences, İstanbul, 2023. Objective: Many different ways to treat caries lesions in young children have been studied throughout history for their clinical efficacy and durability. According to these studies, the widespread use and good clinical performance of stainless steel crowns (SSC) have increased the frequency of preference for them. This thesis study aims to examine how the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Yeditepe University's Faculty of Dentistry has changed its preference for stainless steel crown treatments in light of recent research. Materials and Methods: Between January 2016 and December 2022, patients who were treated in Yeditepe University Dental Hospital's Pediatric Dentistry Department, and whose records were kept in the hospital's operating system, were evaluated. According to the years and the clinic in which it was done, the data collected by requesting it from the hospital operating system were categorized and submitted in the excel file. The data obtained in the study were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 22 (ver. 22.0, SPSS Inc, Armonk, NY, USA) program. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to assess if the study's data were normal. The number of SSC treatments carried out by year was compared using the Kruskal Wallis test to see whether there was a statistically significant difference. The effect of the pandemic on the shift in the number of SSC treatments was evaluated using the Mann Whitney U test. The Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare the treatments provided by general dentists, specialized dentists, and PhD students, as well as to assess the pandemic impact. Results: When the data are reviewed, it is found that while the quantity of stainless steel crowns rose from 2016 to 2019, it declined slightly in 2020. As of 2021, the number of stainless steel crowns has increased again. According to statistics, there was a difference in the quantity of stainless steel crowns by year (p<0.05). This distinction was made between stainless steel crown treatments carried out in 2022 and those carried out in 2016 and 2017. Conclusion: Primary teeth are of great importance for the general health and development of the child. The treatment of caries in primary teeth should be done as soon as possible, taking into account factors such as the child's age, caries risk group, and the size of the caries lesion. Among these treatment options, pediatric crowns prepared from different materials are especially recommended for teeth with endodontic treatment and large caries lesions. Among pediatric crowns, stainless steel crowns are preferred due to their affordability, durability and easy application. Stainless steel crowns greatly contribute to the retention time of primary teeth by reducing the risk of secondary caries and preserving the structural integrity of the tooth. According to the results of this study, stainless steel crown procedures increased until the COVID-19 epidemic disturbed clinical applications. The fall in treatments observed in 2020 was followed by an increase in treatments once more in 2022 as the pandemic's influence diminished.
