The examination of personal characteristics of saz performance of Talip Özkan

The performance style of Talip Özkan has a feature that reflects the transition between traditional performance and urban performance which started with urbanization. In this direction, although he is a performer who knows the styles of Anatolian music cultures well, it is seen that he also has a contact with different music cultures such as the Caucasus region. Moreover, he is not only known to come into prominence with his identities such as researcher, compiler and academician, but also he stands out with his various contacts with music in every sense. Apart from being a performer who has absorbed the local styles well, Talip Özkan in fact draws the profile of a performer, in which his personal attitude comes to the fore together with his interpreter identity that can be seen in the maturing and maturity periods after the youth period. In this direction, he exhibits the saz playing techniques at the level of virtuosity, and concordantly he has a repertoire consisting of distinguished works. Another feature that stands out in Özkan's performance style is that he often interprets the melodies in his own way of understanding. It is thought that his style of processing melodies is based on an understanding of performance that can be renewed at any time, and he reshapes the melodies as rhythmic, melodic and partially harmonic, and there are many melodies that he performs accordingly. Özkan uses his multi-instrumentalist identity with different theme of instruments within the framework of adaptation, and in this direction, it is seen that he reflects the technical characteristics and repertoire of the instruments to the saz performance. When considered from this point of view, it is known that he transferred especially zeybek melodies, from the cultural structure he belongs, to saz performance and he is accepted as a reference performer in several communities on this subject. Özkan's performance style, which is the main subject of our study, will be examined under multifaceted titles through 22 musical works. The determined works will be slowed down by various digital programs and transcribed in detail, and in this direction, the performance style of Özkan will be analyzed on the basis of the transcripts.
