Abstract (EN)

The 19th century has been remembered as an era of change and transformation throughout the world, and the developments in this process have affected each state and society separately in terms of their own internal dynamics. For the Ottoman Empire, this century was a century of radical changes in which the state and society were reshaped, and especially the Tanzimat Period constituted a turning point in terms of modernisation. After the proclamation of the Tanzimat Edict, a process of modernisation was initiated in many fields such as administrative, social, military, economic, cultural, etc. The reforms implemented with the Tanzimat were implemented in the provinces included in the Tanzimat. Vidin province was also one of the regions where Tanzimat reforms were implemented. This thesis focuses on the developments in the city between 1839-1864 and analyses various internal and external dynamics affecting the city. The administrative, social, demographic and physical structure of Vidin is analysed within the framework of the Tanzimat reforms and the factors affecting the state and society in this process are presented in the example of Vidin province.
