Abstract (EN)

Master ThesisSUMMARYDETERMINATION OF DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF HISTORICAL MASONRY DOMES USING OPERATIONAL MODAL TESTINGŞenay UÇAKKaradeniz Technical UniversityThe Graduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesCivil Engineering Graduate ProgramSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Alemdar BAYRAKTAR2012, 96 PagesIn this thesis, it is aimed to determine the dynamic characteristics of historical masonry domes using Operational Modal Testing and Finite Element (FE) method. The thesis consists of mainly five chapters. In the first chapter, the general information about domes and modeling strategies of historical structures are given. Then, literature research concerning this subject, using methods to determine dynamic characteristics and formulations are presented. The end of the first chapter, the information about the finite element updating methods is mentioned. In the second chapter, the properties of Hamza Paşa Mausoleum and Kavak Meydan Fountain are given and created finite element models are presented. Then, the performed OMA applications and experimental dynamic characteristics of domed structures are given. In the third chapter, experimental and analytical results are compared with each other and initial finite element models are updated by using experimental results. In the fourth chapter, the results of analysis and suggestions are presented. In the fifth chapter which is the end of the thesis, the references used in this thesis are given. At the end of the thesis, it is emphasized that the OMA method can be used safely to determine the dynamic characteristics of the historical masonry domes and to update initial finite element models.Key Words: Historical Masonry Domes, Operational Modal Testing, Finite Element Model Updating
