Abstract (EN)

With the increase in population, more and more greenhouse gas emissions are released into the atmosphere every day. A significant part of the greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere originates from the internal combustion engines used in vehicles. Although hybrid and electric vehicle technologies have come to the forefront in recent years in order to prevent this problem, the use of the classic internal combustion engine will still be a major part of the vehicles in the near future as it is today. This shows that the measures to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines will remain an important engineering field for a while. In this study, it has been investigated how turbulence generators (turbulator) with different geometries placed in the intake manifold of a single-cylinder diesel engine will change the air movement entering the cylinder and the vortex formations in the cylinder. Cylinder and manifold geometries were prepared and turbulence generators in different shapes were positioned on the intake manifold. Computational fluid dynamics analyzes were performed in ANSYS and FLUENT programs. Analyzes were carried out based on 3 different engine speed: 1000 rpm, 2000 rpm and 3000 rpm. At the end of the analysis, the swirl and tumble ratios, which are important indicators of combustion efficiency in the cylinder, were calculated and the changes in different geometries under different operating conditions were shown with graphics. The turbulent kinetic energies obtained at different sections in the cylinder were compared. As a result of the study, it has been shown that as a result of placing a turbulator on the intake manifold, the swirl and tumble ratios in the cylinder are improved, and thus, the combustion efficiency can be increased and pollutant emissions can be reduced.
