Abstract (EN)

British architect and painter Thomas Allom, known for his Istanbul engravings in the 19th century, lived between 1804 and 1872. The artist who we could not get any information about his elementary education, did his apprenticeship and academic education on architecture. Allom who received an offer from Fisher Publishing House due to his success on architectural drawings, made drawings for engraving travelogues by visiting Scotland, Ireland, European countries and Ottoman Empire. He published the drawings he made on the Ottoman lands in his books called Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor and Costume in Turkey and Italy which were later translated to German and French. The drawings he prepared for these publications were also included in the panorama exhibitions held in 1838 and later years. The work of the artist who created the subject of study with Ottoman world consists of religious structures, harem stages, water structures and civil architecture in the interiors, and panoramic and architectural landscapes and figurative scenes in the exteriors. In this work, the engravings of artist were studied in detail and watercolor copies of some of them were determined. Other watercolor works have not been published in publications were also determined. Allom, who was effective in the reign of Sultan II. Mahmud, also made the painting of the Sultan like other some European artists. When his works are evaluated in general, it is understood that there are authentic paintings that reflect the qualities of the 19th century Ottoman architecture, daily life and clothing, which are meticulously detailed.
