Abstract (EN)
The literature contains numerous studies on the relationship between Type 2 diabetes and/or its complications with various psychological issues. However, research on the relationship between Type 1 diabetes and obsessive-compulsive disorder is quite limited. The primary aim of this study is to determine the impact of Type 1 diabetes on obsessive-compulsive attitudes, thereby making an original and academic contribution to the literature in this field. The experimental group was selected through Type 1 diabetes groups on social media platforms, while the control group was determined through the researcher's social communication network. The study included 98 participants diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and 99 participants without diabetes. Participant Information Questionnaire, Diabetes-Related Problem Areas Survey (DİSA), and Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Questionnaire (MOKSL) were used to collect data. Parametric and non-parametric tests were used to assess group differences based on data distribution. The research results indicate that individuals diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes exhibit significantly higher levels of obsessive-compulsive attitudes compared to those without a diabetes diagnosis, and this condition is associated with problematic areas related to diabetes. Additionally, it has been confirmed that stress factors in glycemic control and anxiety related to diabetes are linked to obsessive-compulsive symptoms. These findings emphasize the significance of the psychological impact of Type 1 diabetes on mental health and underscore the necessity of psychological support strategies in diabetes management. The research findings offer potential guidance for healthcare professionals in integrating the psychological status of Type 1 diabetes patients into treatment plans and providing necessary support. Researchers are advised to advance future studies with broader and more diverse sample groups, long-term follow-up studies, and more comprehensive analytical methods. Such studies will contribute significantly to the development of intervention strategies aimed at preserving the physical and psychological well-being of individuals with diabetes.
