Abstract (EN)

Objective: In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between microalbuminuria and serum magnesium, serum uric acid, and uric acid/magnesium ratio in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were under follow-up for microalbuminuria. Materials and Methods: Our study included 125 patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus who were admitted to the Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinic at Balıkesir University Research and Application Hospital between January 2022 and August 2022. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of microalbuminuria. Serum uric acid, serum magnesium levels, and uric acid/magnesium ratios were compared among the patients. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Windows) 22.0 program to evaluate the findings obtained in the study. Findings: In our study, no statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of gender, age, education level, height, weight, and BMI (p>0.05). Among the additional chronic diseases, hypertension and hyperlipidemia were significantly more common in the group with microalbuminuria (p<0.05). When comparing the medications used, the use of metformin was significantly higher in the control group (p<0.05). In the comparison of biochemical parameters between the two groups, no statistically significant differences were found in serum uric acid, serum magnesium, and all other parameters (p>0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that weight and BMI increased the risk of microalbuminuria (p<0.05). Similarly, an increase in triglycerides and LDL was found to increase the risk of microalbuminuria (p<0.05). Although a unit increase in the uric acid/magnesium ratio significantly increased the risk of microalbuminuria, it was not statistically significant (OR: 102390183.9, p>0.05). However, it was predicted to be clinically significant. Conclusion: In cases diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and microalbuminuria, no relationship was observed between serum uric acid, serum magnesium, and uric acid/magnesium ratios. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, microalbuminuria, uric acid, magnesium.
