Abstract (EN)

This study aims to examine the transformation and evolution of the role and definition of typography as a design element with in the time period from modernism to today's experimentalism, and determine the characteristics of experimental postmodern typography of today. For this purpose, the manifests/principles and design examples of are analysed, the designs of the designers Wolfgang Weingart, April Greiman, Herbert (Herb) Lubalin, Max Kisman, David Carson, Neville Brody, Catherine Zask, Stefan Sagmeister, M/M Paris, Peter Bil'ak and Oded Ezer who laid the foundations of experimental typography are examined and finally various practices and media of experimental typography such as kinetic, transitional, 3D and organic typography are exampled. The study finds that there is a thin line between modernism's quest for the new and the experimentalism of today's typography. The influences of the Modernist movements -namely Futurism, Dadaism, Konstructivism, De Stijl, Bauhaus, New Typography and Swiss Style- on typographic design is reflected by means of the restrictions of their manifests. Dissimilarly experimental typography has the characteristics of being mostly temporary and momentary, and generally lacking standard fonts due to unique creations, without being restricted by any established design convention. Therefore, this study claims that the traditional definition of typography is inadequate to define today's experimental typography.
