Irfan Fethi Gemuhluoglu: His influence on Turkey's social and spiritual milieu during his lifetime nad beyond

The intention of this thesis is to analyse the ways in which Irfan Fethi Gemuhluoglu positively influenced Turkish thoughts and beliefs during his lifetime, and beyond within Turkey's social structure and social dynamics after 1920. With a particular emphasis on the integral relationship between people and social institutions, this pioneering academic study will examine the social context within which his spiritual and intellectual ideas took shape, in addition to exploring the social mechanisms that facilitated their widespread diffusion. Also, this thesis aims to analyse the importance of Fethi Gemuhluoğlu as an intellectual and his contributions to society in the context of sociology of intellectuals. The first section, especially after the establishment of the Republic between 1920-1980 years, will provide a period analysis of Turkey's social, political, and socio-economic structure by considering a social change of Turkey. The second section will address a summary of Gemuhluoglu's life, focusing on his personal values, lifestyle, cultural pursuits and intellectual background. Attention will also be given to Gemuhluoglu's actions within his social environment and relations with his own community. In addition to these, the extent of Gemuhluoglu's influence on Turkish culture during his lifetime, with a particular focus on his impact on young people and the role model status he achieved through his writing. This will be achieved through analysis of his own work, and secondary sources, such as Baglanma which is the only independent work written after the gemuhluoglu (2011) by Nuri Pakdil. In addition to exploring Gemuhluoglu's positive contribution during this period, the continued impact of his intellectual legacy on Turkish culture will also be identified. On a broader scale, this thesis will also argue that some of the concepts central to Gemuhluoglu's approach to overcoming social discord, such as love and friendship, can provide fresh perspectives with respect to ongoing sociopolitical issues within Middle Eastern, African and Islamic countries. In the third chapter, it will be provided the connection between intellectuals and society is established by explaning the concept of intellectuals. Attention will also be given to Gemuhluoglu's importance within his social environment and positive contribution to his society as an intellectual in the context of sociology of intellectuals.
