Abstract (EN)

In this study, a total of 114 sera samples were collected from pregnant women whohave been suspected to have acute toxoplasmosis by the Department of Gynecologyand Obstetrics of Gaziantep University Şahinbey Hospital and the sera were referredto the Central ELISA Laboratory. Specific Toxoplasma IgM and IgG antibodies havebeen primarily studied form the sera by ELFA method and then samples have beenfurther investigated by ELFA IgG Avidity test, to find out whether the infection wasin acute or chronic phase of the disease.Of the pregnant women, 55,26% were Toxoplasma IgM positive and 16,6% wereborderline IgM positive, while 96,49% of them were Toxoplasma IgG positive and2,63% were borderline IgG positive. Both IgM and IgG antibodies were detected at53,50% of pregnant women, while there was no sample negative for both of them. In0,87% of cases, IgM antibodies were detected by the abscence of IgG antibodies andin 25,43% of cases only IgG antibodies were present in samples. With the use of Toxoplasma IgG Avidity test, avidity was found low, borderline, and high in 27,68%, 29,50%, and 42,62% of 61 pregnant women who hadiiisera both positive for Toxoplasma IgM and IgG antibodies, respectively. In 29pregnants who were positive only for IgG antibodies, avidity was detected low, borderline, and high in 3,4%, 10,34%, and 79,31% of cases, respectively. Aviditywas found low, borderline, and high in 4,348%, 21,73%, and 73,91% of 23 pregnantwomen who had sera borderline for Toxoplasma IgM and positive for IgGantibodies, respectively. As result, it is concluded that ELFA IgG Avidity test can be used to distinguishbetween acute and chronic toxoplasmosis during pregnancy as a reliable method.iv
