Penal institutions in execution of prison sentences in Turkish criminal law

Abstract (EN)

Imprisonment is while being one of the envisaged sanctions in article 45 of Turkish Penal Code, there are three different types of imprisonments ("aggravated life sentence", "life sentence" and "short term imprisonment") according to article 45 of Turkish Penal Code. In its most general form, imprisonment is a type of sanction that is executed by depriving the convict of his/her freedom for a period of time, for whom a final conviction has been made. There are provisions in the Turkish Penal Code article 47, article 48, article 50, and article 25 of the Law on the Execution of Penalties and Security Measures on how the execution will take place. Within the scope of the study, imprisonment, execution of imprisonment and types of penitentiary institutions in Turkish Criminal Law were examined. Especially; the extent to which the imprisonment is effective in realizing the aims expected from the purpose of punishment is given in the theoretical plane. In the conclusion part, the role of imprisonment in preventing crime is evaluated by considering several statistical tables.
